Costain and VPS Site Security shortlisted for joint entry in Construction Awards

VPS Site Security, specialists in protecting large and remote locations from construction sites to railways, and Costain, the British construction and civil engineering company, have been selected as a finalist in the Commercial Innovation category of the 2016 Construction News Awards.

The product, the JCB Smart Tower, made the shortlist from among a record number of entrants.

Simon Alderson, Managing Director of VPS Site Security, commented:

"The JCB Smart Tower provides an innovative ground-breaking platform for protecting remote and challenging sites, such as the £150 million Heads of the Valleys highways improvement scheme in South Wales, being built by Costain. With 18 Smart Towers and 36 cameras wirelessly networked with advanced, remote sensors and a mobile monitoring station, the innovation team created an incredible solution for this highways project that will benefit construction sites no matter how large or how challenging their location."

Sarah-Jane Waith, Costain Head of Supply Chain Highways, Power & Nuclear New Build, added:

"The works requires equipment compounds over a 14 km long stretch of land. The JCB Smart Towers not only keep the plant secure from theft or vandalism, but also give us an early warning of motorists whose vehicles break down along the route and require help. Not only is the site protected, but also we minimise potential delays to the project."

Before the awards, all finalists will attend face-to-face judging by members of the 61-strong jury, made up of the most influential clients and experts in the UK.

The winners will be announced on 14 July 2016 at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, where over 1,300 of the industry's elite will join together for a night of entertainment, celebration and networking.
