Free locks all round

Police and council officials in North East Leeds have launched an initiative to boost home security around the Temple Newsam area by fitting free new locks to over 100 local homes.

The new initiative, which has been funded by Leeds City Council, aims to combat house burglary and is the first of a number of crime prevention schemes in the area being coordinated between neighbourhood police and local councillors.

Receiving his new keys Mr Stalgis said: "As a previous victim of burglary I fully support what the police and councillors are doing and think it's great that they are actively improving people's home security."

Inspector Tom Harrison, who leads the Crossgates, Whinmoor and Temple Newsam Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:

"Home security is something we can all improve on and this is just one way we, alongside the local council, can help. Temple Newsam is just one part of the local area where we are working to improve the security of homes and businesses. Over the coming year we are planning to roll out this initiative into other local communities and areas with a high percentage of elderly and vulnerable people. As well as fitting new locks officers have also been advising local people on how they can improve the general security of their homes with simple tips including leaving lights on, investing a relatively small amount of money on timer switches, and ensuring that doors are locked, even when you're in the house.

"It's a startling statistic, but almost one in every three burglaries occur as a result of an insecure door or window so getting into the habit of locking the door behind you when you walk in significantly reduces your chance of becoming a victim."
