ABUS acts to reduce impact of April 2011 prices on UK specific cylinder locks

The new ABUS Pfaffenhain (APf) 2011 price list launches on April 1 with an average price increase of 1.7% from those published in July 2009.   However customers will see some significant and unavoidable price rises in oval and night-latch cylinders.

Within ABUS, these APf oval and night-latch cylinders are peculiar to the UK, and are effectively manufactured exclusively for the UK market in comparatively small volumes. ABUS UK, in its first APf pricing review since July 2009, and despite increasing costs in raw materials and global inflation has been able to reduce some APf internationally high volume cylinders, but has also been forced to raise the price of APf oval and night-latch cylinders to reflect the true overheads for their manufacture.

So despite what on average comes out at an inflation beating average 1.7% increase, ABUS UK is aware that the almost 50% RRP increases it has been forced to apply to APf oval and night-latch cylinders may leave some of it's loyal APf distributors wondering how to justify these specific increases to their customers, where if APf oval and night-latch cylinders have been widely specified, it could look like profiteering from a captive market.

In recognition of successful past specification of APf oval and night-latch cylinders by ABUS UK APf distributors, and to help ease the initial impact of the price rise ABUS UK will commit to honouring its 2009 prices for oval and night-latch cylinders plus a 10% surcharge, provided the distributor has a proven need for their further use in existing customer contracts. This support will run until the end of 2011, and is strictly limited to past contracts where APf oval and night-latch cylinders have been specified and provided.

ABUS UK's MD Nick Vanderhoest says: "The specific decision to raise the price of our oval and night-latch cylinders was taken in good faith based on purely commercial factors. Put simply, our 2011 prices now reflect genuine factory costs, with genuine factory increases and savings passed on via our 2011 RRPs.

"That said we do understand the accusations that may arise if all these cost based RRPs are applied to existing contracts. Thus we in equal good faith wish to help our distributors out of what might be a tight spot. Our factory can not sell at loss making prices, and we certainly can not expect our distributors to do so. ABUS UK therefore offers this temporary price bridging where needed.

"We also understand there has been some discussion as to the secrecy of our APf UK distributors. ABUS UK is more than happy to publish details of our active APf distributors, but also recognise that due to possible commitments elsewhere not all our distributors want to be openly listed as fully committed stocking distributors of ABUS Pfaffenhain. Thus we ask any APf distributor who would not like us to publish via our PR, advertising or websites their details to advise us. Otherwise we will be glad to assume that our APf distributors will be as proud to be committed to ABUS Pfaffenhain as we are proud to have them on board, and will be pleased to pass on fellow distributors' details."
