ICO hosts European Conference of Data Protection Authorities

Last month the ICO hosted the European Conference of Data Protection Authorities at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester. Attracting nearly 100 delegates from more than 40 countries the theme of this year’s conference was ‘Data Protection in Practice’, with a focus on delivering practical results for individuals.

Across three days delegates debated the challenges faced by data protection authorities and data controllers and looked at how to develop effective enforcement action.

The Information Commissioner Christopher Graham spoke at the conference, discussing the potential impact of a reformed EU data protection regulation, the role of international co-operation and the importance of properly funding regulation. He also highlighted research commissioned by the ICO that looked at what control and security UK internet users expected when providing their data. The results of that research, together with a paper pulling together the findings of recent similar studies across Europe, have also been published.

At the end of the conference the authorities agreed on a resolution, ‘Meeting data protection expectations in the digital future.’
