This is our 100th issue! Thanks to all of our advertising supporters for helping make achieving this milestone possible. Now on with the news:

Following the announcement last week of the new Auto Locksmiths EXpo (ALEX) to be held next October, the following companies have come on board as sponsors: UAP/Tradelocks, Lockdecoders, KAP Diagnostics, and Hickleys.

Stands are selling fast (over one third sold), and as space is limited, everyone interested in taking part is advised to act now. W: http://alexpo.co.uk

Last week's public sector workers strike was a bit of a damp squib and the mainstream media reported reduced queues at airports but was that only because everyone was waved through? Much has also been made of the burgeoning security costs of the London Olympics, a reported £7m an hour for the opening and closing ceremonies alone. While taxpayers consider such eye-watering sums to be too high, there will obviously be those within the security sector who will be doing very well out of it. When the Olympics were last held in London, in 1948, security was a couple of blokes in straw boaters and a few coppers taken off the beat. How times change!

Potential fortune in old coins discovered in safe-opening gamble that paid off!

An old safe bought for $300 at a Virginia auction has yielded treasure for a New Jersey businessman.

Eric Doran's staff laughed when they saw M&M's bags after a locksmith opened the safe Thursday. Then Doran started pouring the contents on the floor.
More than $500 in cash, several hundred dollars in quarters and coins dating to the 1800s were in the safe, which hadn't been open in about 20 years. Doran, who owns Doran Liquidators, tells The Press of Atlantic City he had hoped to sell the approximately 140-year-old safe on eBay because of its unique look. Doran says his gamble paid off.

Embedded security in cars - hackers and solution providers in one room at ESCAR 2011

As part of their continued research into all aspects of vehicle security, SBD recently attended the 2011 Embedded Security in Cars (ESCAR) conference held in Dresden, Germany. Delegates witnessed a variety of presentations encompassing different aspects of IT security in cars; broadly covering security protocols, CAR2X security and hardware security. BMW was present with a special exhibit to show the in-car deployment of a hardware security module developed as a result of the EVITA project.

Two of the presentations were from academics that showed how their respective university research teams had successfully manipulated, or 'hacked', certain vehicle functions.
