Eric Doran's staff laughed when they saw M&M's bags after a locksmith opened the safe Thursday. Then Doran started pouring the contents on the floor.
More than $500 in cash, several hundred dollars in quarters and coins dating to the 1800s were in the safe, which hadn't been open in about 20 years. With Christmas almost upon us it's time to get out and do some shopping! This will be our final broadcast until the New Year and we trust that you have an enjoyable holiday. Many of you will be working over the period, and for that you do have our gratitude. We wish a peaceful, safe, and secure season for all.

Although not broadcasting, the site will remain live during the break, ready to announce any major breaking news that may occur in our industry. We look forward to getting to grips with all the opportunities and challenges that will present themselves in 2012, especially the two exhibitions organised by the Locks & Security media group: the Locksmiths Exhibition in March, and the new Auto Locksmith's EXpo (ALEX) in the Autumn. It will all be upon us perhaps sooner than we realise, so plan early if you can. See you next year!

The cyber security industrial complex

Documents point to a huge industry that provides online surveillance tools to governments and police agencies.

A claim by Wikileaks that documents it released last week provide evidence of a "secret new industry" of mass surveillance was as breathless as previous pronouncements from Julian Assange's organization, reports Technology Review.

But the material does provide a stark reminder that our online activities are easily snooped upon, and suggests that governments or police around the world can easily go shopping for tools to capture whatever information they want from us.

"Where will your supply chain's next risk come from?"

Last year saw an increase of 40% in lorry and cargo theft in the UK. There are about 450 000 lorries on the UK roads and less than 2000 secure truck parking spaces in the UK. Confidential data loss in the UK continues to rise - How can we prevent it?

An investigation by Big Brother Watch this week unveiled 1,035 data-loss incidents across 132 local authorities in the UK since 2008*. Even scarier is the fact that 72% of UK companies admit to having lost confidential data through missing USBs, according to a new European study conducted by the Ponemon Institute and Kingston Technology.

Simply purchasing secure encrypted USB sticks is no longer enough. Public and private companies need to introduce best practice policies, procedures and awareness training for their staff before it is too late and they have another data loss scandal at hand. Global standards and strong privacy and data protection legislations need to be put in place and full enforcement ensured, including holding those liable at fault.
