Potential fortune in old coins discovered in safe-opening gamble that paid off!

An old safe bought for $300 at a Virginia auction has yielded treasure for a New Jersey businessman.

Eric Doran's staff laughed when they saw M&M's bags after a locksmith opened the safe Thursday. Then Doran started pouring the contents on the floor.
More than $500 in cash, several hundred dollars in quarters and coins dating to the 1800s were in the safe, which hadn't been open in about 20 years. Doran, who owns Doran Liquidators, tells The Press of Atlantic City he had hoped to sell the approximately 140-year-old safe on eBay because of its unique look. Doran says his gamble paid off.

Welcome back to Locks and Security News and hopefully a happy and successful year for all of us involved in this rich and varied industry of ours. Although there are some positive highlights coming up in the year - the Locksmiths' Exhibition in March, and the new Auto Locksmiths Exhibition in October (be sure to read the news below and register NOW for free entry - approaching 1,000 have already, so don't you miss out), there is other news that causes more than a little dismay. Richard Breslin is well known throughout the locksmith industry and is a strong advocate of proper training. Due to his activities in exposing certain 'trainers' it seems that he is now being targeted by a hate mail campaign. We publish his letter below.

We also hear of a pseudo Neighbourhood Watch website and an aggressive advertising sales campaign for a "Bluelight Magazine" supposedly connected with the police. More information on this below. Watch out guys.

Hate mail campaign

We have received this letter from Richard Breslin:

I'm very sorry I have to write to you all in this manner.

As you may be aware, I'm very active on Twitter, social media and voice my concerns on fake training organisations. Over the last few months I, along with a few others, have directed our concerns at certain "Trainers" - the poor training, fake association, lack of support, duping public and honest people out of money, lack of ethics and false hopes.

I have now been targeted by a very hateful, malicious and evil mail campaign. This is not the normal run of the mill but something that has a dark twist. This is a very disgusting and an unbelievable thing that no one would ever want to be accused of.

Pseudo Neighbourhood/Home Watch Network

Information has been received from the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network, concerning a website purporting to be Neighbourhood Watch.

The website is called www.nhwo.co.uk and was launched on 14th December 2011. The website is not supported by nor has links to the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network. The marketing of the site is pitched to NhW members to register their scheme and obtain membership resources. They are marketing a 'co-ordinators pack' at £39.99 which includes 2 street signs, stickers and a high visibility vest with Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator on the back. There is no mention of good practice; partnership working with the local police service or insurances.

WARNING: misleading advertising sales calls for "Bluelight Magazine"

We have had a number of queries from suppliers lately saying they have been contacted by a company called "Sigma" or "Sigma Publishing", trying to sell them advertising in a publication called "Bluelight Magazine". The reports we have are that the sales technique is incredibly aggressive and aimed at getting a verbal agreement to an ad then sending an invoice the same day without any proof it's gone into a valid publication.

We would just like to state that the "Bluelight Magazine" and "Sigma Publishing" are not associated with the Bluelight eTendering website (www.bluelight.gov.uk) in any way. A couple of suppliers have informed us that "Sigma" have told them the magazine has been produced in conjunction with the "Police Federation", or that they are actually from the polic

Security salesman charged in woman's rape

After a door-to-door salesman for a security alarm company was arrested and charged with raping a woman who opened her door to him, deputies say he made a chilling statement.

Rashad Hales, 19, told deputies his only regret was not killing the victim, said Larry McKinnon, spokesman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Hales was going door-to-door in northwest Hillsborough for Secure Watch, which is an authorised dealer for ADT, McKinnon said.

While it might be difficult or onerous to remove them overnight, it makes sense to do this and not give the thieves any opportunities.
