Potential fortune in old coins discovered in safe-opening gamble that paid off!

An old safe bought for $300 at a Virginia auction has yielded treasure for a New Jersey businessman.

Eric Doran's staff laughed when they saw M&M's bags after a locksmith opened the safe Thursday. Then Doran started pouring the contents on the floor.
More than $500 in cash, several hundred dollars in quarters and coins dating to the 1800s were in the safe, which hadn't been open in about 20 years. Doran, who owns Doran Liquidators, tells The Press of Atlantic City he had hoped to sell the approximately 140-year-old safe on eBay because of its unique look. Doran says his gamble paid off.

Comment:

After hearing that during a security test a pretend bomb was successfully smuggled into the Olympic Park (at least they are carrying out security tests), we learn that confidential anti-terrorism documents have been left on a train. Now we hear that potential MI5 recruits have a 15 minute internet quiz to see if they are suitable for the service. If they pass, maybe the first lessons should be: 'chain your bloody briefcase / laptop to your wrist when taking the train; don't throw away any documents without shredding first (and certainly not in public parks); oh and don't engage sexy Russians to be your secretary.' Whatever next?

On the upside, there is just one stand remaining at the Locksmiths' Exhibition in March. If you have thought about showing but have not yet made the final decision, better do so now.

Aussie businesses 'soft targets' for hackers, says security expert

In its latest report, Dimension data subsidiary, Security-Assessment, warns that, unlike the United States where companies are required by law to disclose details of data security breaches, and the UK, where internet service providers and telecommunications companies are required by law to disclose data breaches under the current European Union data protection directive, no such legislation exists in Australia.

"Currently the focus is on the clean-up of data security breaches rather than prevention. There has been no impetus for businesses to reveal data exposures and minimal fines imposed, which means there is limited incentive for businesses to comply with the PCI DSS," says Roger Greyling, a security consultant with Security-Assessment.com.
