European Commission locks horns with Germany over data retention law European Union regulators have warned Germany that it must implement the controversial Data Retention Directive within one month or face legal action and possible fines. The Data Retention Directive requires EU member states to store vast amounts of telecommunications information, including data about email, phone calls and text messages, for law enforcement purposes. Comment: As if we needed any reminder, the news that a locksmith has been killed just for doing his job during a legal eviction, along with a police officer who accompanied him, bears witness yet again that locksmithing at the 'coal face' can be a dangerous job with long, unsocial hours. Thankfully fatal incidents of this nature are still comparitively rare, but this is one of the reasons OPAL has been formed. Our sympathies go to the families of both victims. The second big news item for us this week is that our sister publication Locks & Security Magazine has now fully switched over from a free controlled circulation journal to paid-for only. Locksmith killed during legal eviction A locksmith hired to help in the process of evicting a California tenant was shot dead, along with the sheriff's deputy serving the eviction notice, police said last Friday. In addition to the two men shot dead, a lone body has been found inside the charred ruins of the Modesto, California, apartment building, Modesto police Officer Chris Adams told CNN.
