Thieves are risking their own lives to steal cable

* recoveredCable.jpgPolice are warning would-be thieves to think again if they are thinking of trying to steal metal from electrical or telephone cables. Many of these cables are live and anyone attempting to steal copper or lead from them could potentially be putting themselves and others in grave danger.

This advice has been issued after police in West Kent, carrying out an operation to combat metal theft in the region have made a series of arrests for theft of cable.

Symantec vows to protect cloud apps and infrastructure

Symantec has launched a new platform designed to keep cloud applications and cloud infrastructure safe from cyber security threats.

Symantec O3 - unveiled at the company's Vision conference in Barcelona - works for both public and private cloud infrastructure by allowing businesses to extend their internal security policies out to the cloud.

It aims to create a single "control point" for all cloud services a firm uses, keeping the same identity and information security for each employee across every solution, be it application or infrastructure-based.

Business research and consulting experts Frost & Sullivan has announced the release of a new research report into the future direction of convergence across the security industry. 

Demonstrating that there is now a fundamental need for the convergence of systems across physical security and safety, logical security and communications, building control and lighting, and energy management, the research sheds new light on the changing role different business stakeholders now play in the evolving convergence market place. New buying groups include marketing, operations, HR and financial departments due to the complexities of systems and vulnerabilities through the use of IP enabled solutions.

IAATI European event - Romania September 2011

The European Chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators (IAATI) held their annual training seminar event in Bucharest between the 28th and 30th September, and SBD was amongst the 140 international delegates who attended to learn more about the pan-European situation for vehicle theft.

Whilst the vehicle theft situation varies slightly in each market, strong trends are increasingly common across large parts of Europe, both in the work of criminals and from the authorities who work to stop them.

NOS Consultations and Qualifications Surveys

It is now time for wider consultation on the changes that have been made and practitioners in these two sectors are invited to have their say. This is an important part of the review process and all comments will go back to the advisory working groups for consideration.

Hoax e-mail From "Crimestoppers"

Trading Standards has advised of a hoax email purporting to be from Crime Stoppers. The email states that "if forced by a robber to withdraw monies, the victim can notify the bank they are under duress and alert the Police by entering their PIN number in reverse."

This is a hoax, and entering a reverse PIN will have no effect.

There have been reports from businesses and consumers that they are being contacted by companies claiming that their domain registration needs to be updated for a cost of around £75.

IATA warns that UK airports struggling to cope with security costs

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has warned that the main UK airports are struggling to cope with mounting layers of security regulations that are costing some £4.6bn a year to implement.

Can thieves control my car?

Cars are becoming small computing powerhouses, able to communicate and connect with each other and their surroundings. Bluetooth links, wireless sensors, mobile phone network and even internet connectivity is already available, and the more that cars resemble objects in computing networks, the more vulnerable they become to computing attack methods. SBD have investigated the likelihood of hacking attacks being used to steal vehicles, and have found that future systems may be vulnerable.

JMA has issued their latest Transponder Guide for 2011

JMA is claimed to be the only company capable of combining the copying and cloning of encrypted transponders using transponders of its own development. JMA continues to revolutionise the market by incorporating the new TPH Cloner device, which, together with the TRS-5000, enables the Philips Crypto TP12 to be copied on the new TPX4 transponder.
