Comment: The biggest news for us this week concerns the new Auto Locksmiths show planned for next October. To be held at the same successful venue as the Locksmiths' Exhibition, the East Midlands Conference Centre, the event offers great accessibility from all directions, and of course, tremendous value for exhibitors. If you are in this field - or want to be - be sure to read the news item below. Today is the UK public sector workers strike. While much of the mainstream media reports have naturally concerned school closures and hospitals, as things most likely to affect our day to day lives, border security is obviously a major concern as well. There may be long queues snaking through airports and a complete absence of security at sea ports, although according to a government statement, this will not be the case as effective measures have been planned and taken. UK border ''will be secure'' during strike Robust arrangements are in place to maintain the security of the border ahead of planned strike action today 30th November, the Home Office has insisted. Over the last weeks and months the UK Border Agency had trained managers, staff and contractors to the high standards needed to carry out secure border checks, the department said. Also, staff from foreign posts had been asked to provide extra cover on the day and arrangements were in place with travel partners such as airlines and port operators to identify potential pressure points. The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has announced that it has acquired management responsibility of the Secure Data Release Model (SDRM), a secure method to support immobilizer reset and key code distribution through aftermarket support channels. SDRM, previously managed by the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA), helps ensure that only registered security professionals can gain access to vehicle key codes, according to the ASA. UK's new Cyber Security Strategy The UK government has announced a pilot of a cyber security 'hub' that will enable the public and private sectors to exchange information on cyber threats. This was one of the key announcements of the UK's new Cyber Security Strategy published this week, and is one of the ways in which the government plans to work more closely with businesses to tackle the cyber threat. Yale launches new 'Experts' opportunity for Locksmiths Home security specialist Yale is launching a new professional network, offering locksmiths the opportunity to become Yale Experts to take advantage of the growing market in replacement multipoint locking and PVCu and composite door security. The new Yale Expert programme will provide locksmiths with access to a revolutionary new range of easy-to-install Doormaster replacement multipoint locks, gearboxes and "overnight" locks. This exciting programme will provide a genuine 'one call one repair' solution for the one million plus multipoint locks that will be replaced this year. Insurance company pays for VEDR cameras In delivery fleet Leading kitchen and bathroom manufacturer, Mereway were finding it increasingly difficult to support driving insurance claims with clear and supporting evidence to determine the outcome. The problem was resolved by installing Roadscan VEDR (video event data recording) cameras, into their entire fleet of HGVs. Mereway's insurance company were so impressed with the product, and its ability to reduce false-claims costs that they paid for the cameras. With a fleet of 14 HGV lorries ranging from 7.5 tonnes to 38 tonnes, delivering daily across the UK - Mereway Kitchens and Bathrooms has grown to become one of the largest rigid kitchen manufacturers in the UK. Apple and Android security software Canadian mobile firm Research in Motion (RIM) has offered its expertise to users of rival provider handsets and released security software for Apple and Android devices. The firm said that it used its years of experience to build the software and threw it at the feet of some who have a tablet or a smartphone that is not one of its own. The release is called Blackberry Mobile Fusion and could appeal to users that like Android or Apple handsets, as well as RIM's device management capabilities.
