Canadian Province introduces new security legislation

New provincial legislation has brought all companies and individuals providing security and investigative services in Alberta under the same legislation, resulting in enhanced standards, screening, training requirements, public safeguards, and accountability.

The Security Services and Investigators Act was proclaimed June 1 and replaces the 45-year old Private Investigators and Security Guards Act.

The new legislation applies to Albertans who work or provide services as investigators, loss prevention staff, security guards, locksmiths, alarm responders, executive protection, automotive lockout technicians, as well as those who sell locksmith and automotive bypass tools.

"Whether a locksmith or an alarm responder, many Albertans give professionals in the security industry their trust," said Frank Oberle, Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security. "This new legislation ensures the industry has clear rules and responsibilities to operate under and that there are rigorous standards and an oversight process in place."

Highlights of the legislation include:

clear roles and responsibilities for industry and government;
training standards;
stronger screening and qualification requirements for those employed in the industry;
improved accountability a through rigorous audit and inspection process; and
safeguards for Albertans who use or come into contact with security or investigative services.
