New British Standards
The renowned British Standard on accessibility, BS 8300: 2009 has now been withdrawn and replaced with 2 new standards:
BS 8300-1:2018
Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment. External environment. Code of practice
BS 8300-2:2018
Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment. Buildings. Code of practice
This means that it has effectively been split into two, internal environment and external environment, and the bulk of BS 8300:2009 has fallen in to BS 8300-2:2018.
The new Standards will have minimal impact on the Ironmongery industry as the main issues which relate to our industry, have been unaffected by the revisions and are detailed below:
- Handle heights.
- Lockcase dimensions.
- Handle dimensions.
- Light Reflectance Values.
- Clear Opening Widths.
- Door opening forces.
The GAI will be producing a new GAI Guide to Standard in due course, as well as updating any RIBA CPD material with the new Standard references.
Should anyone have any specific questions relating to the new Standards or how they could purchase the standards via the GAI, please contact [email protected].
