Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association releases the First Edition of the Codes in Context Report

The first edition of the American Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association’s (BHMA) newest initiative, the BHMA Codes in Context Report, has been released. This initial report addresses changes made to the 2021 International Building Code (IBC).

BHMA is an industry leader in building safety and security and is the only organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain performance standards for locks, closers, exit devices and other builder’s hardware. BHMA sponsors third-party certification of hardware products -- a requirement for a product to bear the “BHMA Certified” mark — ensuring that the product meets the ANSI/BHMA standard.

BHMA Codes in Context will be an ongoing series highlighting changes in building codes relevant to door hardware stakeholders. Each edition of this series will include one-page Focus documents, which are in-depth summaries of each code update covered in the report. The first edition includes nine Focus documents providing additional detail on each of the topics addressed in the report.

BHMA has been participating in code development processes of the model building and fire codes for decades to bring industry technical knowledge and information about ANSI/BHMA builders hardware standards into building and fire codes to enhance life safety and security.

“Our Codes in Context Reports were developed to bring information about the latest model code updates to the industry at large—not just to members of our association,” said Lori Greene, BHMA’s marketing communications chair. “The overview report includes brief summaries of code modifications that affect door openings, and the focus documents go into greater detail on each topic. This format is designed to break down the changes in a way that offers easier access to the updated information.”

The nine Focus documents included in this first BHMA Codes in Context Report are listed here.
