Roadside locksmiths responsible for increase in burglaries and car theft in India

According to a report in The Times of India duplicate keys made by roadside locksmiths are making it easier for burglars and car thieves to rob almost at will. For instead of breaking in through a vulnerable door or window burglars simply walk in through the main door using the copy they have had made.

As duplicate keys are easily made, there has been a spate of such burglaries.

Locksmiths sitting by the roadside are experts in making duplicate keys. Some even get keys made out of impressions of the original, taken on soap bars or plaster of paris. This means that anyone who gets hold of keys even for a brief period can get duplicate keys made and gain access to a house or vehicle.

While the average roadside locksmith uses only crude tools to create grooves and edges on a blank by looking at the original, the bigger 'experts' use machines to reproduce exact copies.
