Locksmithing skills standards open for consultation

National Occupational Standards - Locksmithing NOS out for Consultation October - December 2010

Skills for Security, the Standard Setting Organisation for the private security sector, has been working with industry representatives to develop a suite of National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Locksmiths, and now is the time when we need the views of the wider Locksmithing community on what has been developed.

National Occupational Standards describe the knowledge and skills that people need to perform a job of work. They have over 115 uses, including designing training programmes, assessing the skills of the workforce, writing job descriptions and undertaking staff appraisals (to name but a few).

It's fair to say that NOS are vital to the whole of the private security industry, but they are only of use if they are accurate and up-to-date in terms of describing the knowledge and skills required to work in this ever changing sector.

The draft suite of Locksmiths NOS will be available for your views and comments from 1st October to the beginning of December. Please visit the Skills for Security Website (www.skillsforsecurity.org.uk) and click on the banner for NOS consultation; this will enable you to view the draft suite of NOS and supporting documentation and will allow you to complete the online questionnaire providing your comments.

The only people who can determine that the suite of Locksmithing NOS is accurate are those who work in this sector. We urge all Locksmiths to comment on these draft NOS as this is your opportunity to ensure that they meet your requirements and fully reflect the range of activities undertaken by Locksmiths today.
