Locks & security hardware procurement category market research report now available from IBISWorld

Buyers of locks and security hardware have a buyer power score of 3.3 out of 5.0. Scores closer to 5.0 indicate a higher level of buyer power. Buyer negotiation power is limited in this market because substitute products are scarce, related goods must accompany the majority of lock purchases and market share concentration is high, providing the top suppliers with more power over the market, says IBISWorld procurement analyst Aileen Weiss.

Genetec announces integration with ASSA ABLOY Aperio wireless lock technology

Genetec, a leading provider of unified IP security solutions, has announced it plans to support the ASSA ABLOY Aperio wireless lock technology in its Synergis IP-based access control solution. Brighouse-based Avocet Hardware, which manufactures the ABS snap-secure lock, says it is astonished that items such as a pocket sized snapper bar for anti-snap cylinders and a premium lock snapper bar are readily available to buy for as little as £34.95 on Amazon.

Castel provides modern security solution for Grade 1 listed Palace of Westminster estate

However, by using the latest in IP technology, the upgrade became a simpler task for the company installing the new security system, with Castel's Xellip IP intercom at the heart of the solution.

The Palace of Westminster estate is located in central London and includes both the House of Lords and the House of Commons. There are many other buildings included in the estate, which is spread throughout Westminster and encompasses the iconic Houses of Parliament and Elizabeth Tower, home to Big Ben - all of which needed to be included in the upgraded security programme.

230,000 locks to be put on Abu Dhabi windows

Abu Dhabi's largest commercial and residential building management firm has announced plans to put more than 230,000 locks on windows and balconies in its buildings in the capital to prevent accidental falls, particularly children.

Abu Dhabi Commercial Properties (ADCP), an affiliate of the government-controlled Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, said the project would be completed within one year and would cover all its buildings and villas in the city and its outskirts.

Householders concerned about the security of their homes are calling in locksmiths, installers and security professionals for advice following a BBC TV Watchdog Test House expose on the vulnerability of locks on most domestic PVC-u and composite entrance doors.

Cyber security: the risks to small businesses owners

This year is already stacking up to be a seminal year in cyber security. We're only a couple of months into 2014 and we've already seen multiple stories highlighting the issue. In January, a large-scale theft of data on payment cards was uncovered, which affected 45 retailers in 11 countries. In February, we saw HMRC warning of tax rebate scams and there are reports emerging of fraudsters using online dating sites to ensnare victims.

Cyber security is not just an issue for large businesses. According to the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS), small businesses are now experiencing cyber security incidents only seen previously in larger organisations. In fact, according to their research, 87% of small businesses had a security breach in the last year, which is up from 76% the year before.

ALEX (Auto Locksmiths Expo) 2014

The only exhibition for auto locksmiths in Europe is on the move.

A new venue has been contracted with better facilities for training and exhibitions space, in a hotel environment that has a pool and spa facilities as well as a gym, and more importantly, bars.

The new Venue is the Nottingham Belfry Hotel, Mellors Way, Nottingham, NG8 6PY just one mile from J26 of the M1.

Plans to teach children as young as 11 about careers in cyber-security have been announced.

New learning materials would be offered to UK schools to publicise jobs in the sector, the Department for Business, Innovations and Skills said.

A recent report said limited awareness of cyber-security as a profession had created a skills shortage. One expert said the UK was at risk of being "left behind and at a disadvantage globally."
