Security staff strapping on stab vests

Security workers in New Zealand are spending up to NZ $1300 on stab-proof vests to protect themselves against violent attacks in increasingly high-risk jobs, say suppliers of the hi-tech garments.

A rising number of security guards, door staff, animal control officers and noise patrol officers are wearing the vests to reduce the risk of life-threatening injuries on the job.

Section of Paris bridge begins to collapse under weight of thousands of 'love locks' left by tourists

Oh well. It was nice business while it lasted.

Tourists have been evacuated from one of the most iconic bridges in Paris after it began to crumble under the weight of thousands of 'love locks'. A chunk of the Pont des Arts bridge fell away on Sunday night and the police were called to seal off the area.

Two girls die after hit and run by locksmith who was chasing a non-paying customer

The incident took place in Georgia, USA, with one girl pronounced dead at the scene while the second teenager died later following a devastating hit and run in northern Georgia.

Juliana Ferrell, 16, was pronounced dead on Friday. She was hit earlier last week with two other girls when a locksmith who was chasing a man who drove away before paying for a lockout service lost control of his car.

Police Scotland has recently announced details of the security suppliers selected to deliver a safe and secure Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. Following a robust and competitive tendering process, which examined key factors including capability and value for money, a total of 17 companies have now been contracted to deliver security and stewarding services at the event, which commences next month after seven years of careful planning.

Alpro on the ball in Kent

Shearlocks from Alpro Architectural Hardware are being used to secure the Three Hills Sports Park in Folkestone, Kent. The £7m park is a centre of sporting excellence providing national-standard facilities for hockey, cricket and netball.

The Alpro units have a shear holding force of 1,200kg and are securing doors on the main pavilion and indoor training facilities. They were installed as part of a £7m scheme to convert a dilapidated recreation ground into inclusive community facilities which have increased public participation in sports activities.

EMKA publishes 2014 enclosure and cabinet locking components catalogue

EMKA has published its 2014 enclosure and cabinet components catalogue, which features locks, handles, hinges, gaskets and electronic cabinet security products.

Of note are the radio-activated Agent E swinghandle with RFID card reader and the biometric access control systems with fingerprint scanning developed in partnership with Digitus-Biometrics.

The more conventional modular components in the catalogue are centred on the EMKA locks, handles, hinges and sealing profiles, but the 2014 edition offers greater coverage on technologies associated with these modular systems in production of standard and custom components for industry, transport, electronics and production environments.

Milestone Systems eases the transition from analog into digital video

Milestone Systems, the open platform company in IP video management software (VMS), has announced a new licensing concept for analog cameras used with the forthcoming XProtect 2014 family of VMS products.

In the new licensing concept, only one hardware device license is needed per analog-to-IP encoder unit, regardless of the number of analog cameras connected to the encoder unit. The new Milestone licensing concept will be in effect from May 21 for all XProtect 2014 VMS products.

Blaggers prosecuted following ICO criminal investigation

One of the most complex criminal investigations the Information Commissioner's Office has ever undertaken was brought to a close in April, as the last person behind a company that tricked organisations into revealing personal information about hundreds of individuals was successfully prosecuted under the DPA.

The investigation focused on the activities of a tracing agency called ICU Investigations Limited. The company was run by Barry Spencer and Adrian Stanton and worked on behalf of clients to trace individuals, primarily for the purpose of debt recovery.
