This Week's News

Police arrest serial robber known as 'the locksmith'

Abdelatif Redjil was given a five-year sentence in September with two years suspended for stealing two Picassos worth an estimated 50 million euros from the home of Diana Widmaier-Picasso, the painter's granddaughter. But he escaped and has been on the run ever since. He was nearly arrested on 14 October while trying to force open the safe of an ATM in Colombes, near Paris. His two companions were arrested.

Redjil is also suspected of having a hand in a heist on a branch of Axa bank in February, in which the robbers got away with 33,000 euros and left no trace.

"Entering quietly without breaking anything, that's the speciality of Abdelatif Redjil," a police source told Le Parisien. "He's a break-in ace."

Redjil is also known as the man with the golden fingers.

Facial recognition security to keep handset data safe

By Stewart Mitchell, writing in PC Pro

* Facial_recognition.jpgMobile phone security could come face-to-face with science fiction following a demonstration of biometric technology by scientists at the University of Manchester.

Mobile phones carry an ever-increasing level of personal data, but PIN-code log-ins can prove weak - if even applied - leaving those details vulnerable if a handset is stolen.

Facial recognition software could change that picture drastically.

Smile for the camera

It was never going to be the crime of the century, reports the Daily Mail, but for a few seconds, as he turned from the bookmaker's counter with a bundle of bank notes in his pocket, armed robber Lorenzo Mason thought he had pulled off the perfect heist.

Then it all went wrong. In his haste to leave the shop and merge into the passing crowd, he removed his disguise - right in front of the shop's security camera. To make matters worse for the hapless thief, the image was published in his local newspaper and Mason, 21, was given up to police - by his own mother.

Internet Eyes is watching

A website which pays the public to monitor live commercial CCTV footage online has been launched in Devon.

According to a report by the BBC News Internet Eyes will pay up to £1,000 to subscribers who regularly report suspicious activity such as shoplifting. Managing director Tony Morgan said the scheme would reduce crime and help prevent other anti-social behaviour. But civil liberties campaigners say the idea is "distasteful" and encourages private citizens to spy on each other.

The company intends to stream live footage to subscribers' home computers from CCTV cameras installed in shops and other businesses.

Lock jammers target prestige cars

Surrey police are exploring the theory that a gang of car thieves are jamming central locking systems to make it easier to steal goods from cars.

The theory arose after a witness reported that a man used an electronic device to prevent doors from locking when he parked his Lexus at a local supermarket. Apparently the suspect was lurking in the car park and wearing unusually warm clothes for the season, something that made him stand out like a sore thumb, according to police. The motorist discovered that his car lock would not engage whereupon the suspect walked off seconds before the lock mysteriously started working again.

Inspector Richard Haycock told local newspapers that the possible use of the car lock jammers would help explain a recent spate of thefts from vehicles that have occurred without leaving any signs of forced entry.

Security guard hospitalised after abduction by thieves

A security guard was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after he was abducted by a gang who stole a digger from a building site.

Four men broke into the yard in Catacol Grove, East Kilbride, assaulted the guard then bundled him into their van. The 52-year-old was later found in the abandoned van and taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.

Strathclyde Police has asked for anyone with information to come forward.

The force said that the gang stole the large yellow digger and drove off in that and the van, but crashed and abandoned the digger.
