Locksmiths see free police car door unlocking service as competition
Despite paying for local licences to operate their businesses some US locksmiths are increasingly unhappy that the police have started opening locked car doors for the public free of charge. This has come about since the introduction of a device known as 'the Big Easy'. One locksmith claimed that not only does he pay $400 for his licence, but he is now losing out on charging up to 25 - 30 customers a week $40 or more for his services, now provided free by the police. However Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt said that police across the nation have opened locked car doors for years, using the Slim Jim tool. "This is something we've always done", he said. Lock Decoders have been running a series of soldering classes for locksmiths wanting to learn this art and move to the next level. All MLA members who do the class get 3 CPD points. In addition to basic soldering skills Lock Decoders teach the students how to remove eeproms and micro processors. The class is held in a purpose-built room and is open to anyone wanting to learn this skill. As each student has their own large workbench with tools such as soldering irons and hot air stations supplied there is a maximum number of 6 people per class, taught by two trainers.

Security Reaches a New Level at Scott County Jail
Scott County Jail sought a real-time video analytics solution for the detection of unauthorized people in restricted zones. Automatic detections serve their security needs due to the substantial size of the site, which otherwise would demand a large number of staff physically patrolling the restricted zones, or a Corrections Officer keeping watch and picking up irregularities on nearly 100 screens. Scott County Jail turned to Agent Vi to deploy their real-time video analytics solution: Vi-System. Of 186 cameras at the site, the Jail required enabling 90 cameras with video analytics capabilities. Scott County Jail’s surveillance system employs Milestone XProtect Corporate as their VMS recording and viewing application, which is fully integrated with Agent Vi’s products. Master Lock Lock Lubricant with PTFE formulation is said to be the perfect choice for padlocks, door locks, automotive, marine and multipurpose applications. Smartwater nabs serial jewellery raiders As shown in a recent episode of Crimewatch evidence provided by SmartWater forensic solution that was sprayed onto a gun during an armed robbery has helped Hampshire Constabulary to convict three serial robbers. Elliot Burton, Luke Nash and Simon Waller were convicted for their roles in a string of armed robberies on high class jewellers committed around the country over a two year period. Amongst the gang’s targets were jewellery shops in Birmingham, Chester, Cheltenham, Harrogate and St Albans as well as Jeremy France Jewellers in Winchester. Property stolen during the robberies was estimated to be worth in the region of £2million.
