Swedish competition authorities have approved the acquisition by ASSA Abloy of Swesafe, the largest locksmith business in Sweden. Swesafe will be run as a completely separate unit within Assa Abloy Scandinavia and Goran Burenstam Linder will continue as Managing Director. Swesafe with 24 branches and more than 300 employees will become a sister company to both ASSA AB and Copiax AB.

Enhancements geared to provide better protection against unauthorised entry. The owner of a north Colorado Springs antiques marketplace opening later this month caused a scare recently when he called police and asked what he should do with the nitroglycerin in an old safe! It turned out the liquid wasn't an explosive, just a safecracker's worst nightmare. Mike Underwood, owner of Willowstone Antiques, had bought the safe years ago and planned to display it in his new business. A locksmith found the liquid-filled glass cylinders mounted to a cast-iron frame attached to the inside of the safe's door when he rekeyed the tumblers and told Underwood it could be nitroglycerin! Smartair provides a secure all-in-one access control solution that reduces the cost and inconvenience associated with wiring a traditional access control system. After initial programming, cards or fobs can be easily added or removed from a central point as and when required, in this case the hotel reception. Time zones can also be set and an audit trail is available from the handle to make sure personnel access to a guest room is monitored for extra security. Latin leap for security firm G4S Security services company G4S said high demand for security guards in Latin America was driving growth as it reported a 9% jump in profit. The firm said it was looking to spend £200m on further acquisitions in developing nations such as Brazil as it seeks to offset government spending cuts at home. Chief executive Nick Buckles said: 'There is demand for our guards in emerging markets as they are a stronger force in terms of pay and training than the local police in many areas.' Looking a bit like a robot character from the movies, newly introduced to the expanding range of thermal imaging products from Armstrong Optical of Northampton is the DualCAM system. The DualCAM system offers an easily integrated solution to the most demanding surveillance requirements at an excellent price point. By incorporating a high specification visible imaging camera alongside a high performance thermal imager, and then mounting both onto a pan/tilt unit Armstrong Optical have removed the integration problems sometimes associated with such systems. Integration into pre-existing surveillance networks is now simply a plug-&-play operation. Security Hardware appoints new national sales manager. Security Hardware Ltd, the West Midlands - based hardware distributor, has appointed Adrian Gale to the newly created position of national sales manager. Adrian brings over 20 years experience to his role including sales to PVC-U and timber fabricators, the locksmith trade and contractors. Urban delivers cost savings at Oxford University Press Integrated Security Design has become the latest installer to win business by using Raylux Urban LED illuminators to target new opportunities in general purpose site lighting. In an eco-friendly lighting project recently completed for the historic Oxford University Press building, a range of Raylux Urban units were installed as replacements for old-style 70W and 150W sodium lamps in public access areas. Urban now allows Raytec partners not only to provide lighting for security but also lighting for safer environments.
