Products Regional apprentice takes Aussie state award in a first for the girls Apprentice locksmith, Vanessa Miller, from Bathurst's RCG Locksmiths has just been awarded TAFE NSW's Apprentice of the Year in Locksmithing, outshining all of her fellow students. Full StoryA locksmith in the USA has been arrested on a charge of stealing $500.000 in antique currency after being hired to open a safe after the owner lost the key. Although the owner of the safe and the contents has since died, after the notes appeared at collector's auctions they were traced back to the locksmith who had put them up for sale. When police searched his house they found further antique notes hidden in various places. So, what would you have done in a similar situation? It's easy to be honest for a few pounds (or bucks) but when presented with a life-changing amount... The theft will certainly change that particular locksmith's life: they don't let you off with a wag of the finger over there. And don't pretty much seem to care if prisons are overcrowded either! Testing new ways of preventing the theft of metal from buildings There has been an increase in theft on Cornish churches in recent weeks, with thieves taking copper cable from lightning conductors. On some mining sites local steeplejacks have now resorted to abseiling down the chimneys and engine houses to put the cable out of reach. Some churches are also installing roof alarms and cameras to deter thieves. The church warden at Breage Parish Church, Trevor Bowen, said: "It's a beautiful church. It's just a shame that this sort of thing has to happen. Full StoryThe giant of integrated padlock security If you need to secure a door around 48 ft x 24 ft, the size of four professional snooker tables, then ABUS might just have a padlock big enough to do the job. ABUS claim to have created the largest genuine working padlock in the UK. It is a fully working big brother of ABUS' integrated 83 range, measuring a whopping 30cm x 19cm x 8cm, and weighs over 8kg. compared to the 620gms of it's normal size companion the 83CS/50. The key to this monster is some 22cm long and a bow as large as your fist! IFSEC records 12% visitor growth More than 25,468* security professionals and key decision makers from across the globe congregated at IFSEC from 16-19 May 2011 at the NEC, Birmingham, UK, a 12% increase year on year, confirming why IFSEC is the world's leading annual security event.

UAP Tradelocks - a huge success in Las Vegas Less than two weeks ago, some of the Tradelocks team jetted off to Las Vegas to demonstrate various Tradelocks tools and offer Lishi training at the first ever 'Just Cars' exhibition. Renowned locksmith engineers Martin Pink and Richard Breslin joined Directors David Jennings and Chris Pankhurst to launch the Lishi brand in America through demonstrating the precision of the tools. The Lishi brand proved to be a complete success throughout the whole exhibition, with customers getting in on the fun and attempting to 'Beat the Brit'- a competition set up by UAP Tradelocks Sales Director, Chris Pankhurst - where they had to try and beat the time it took members of the Tradelocks team to pick open a car door with a Lishi pick. Hafele Dialock access control systems are an intelligent, flexible solution of quality locking systems, developed in close contact with the electrical trade. The Dialock system uses electronic keys, terminals and programming units allowing authorised access to buildings and rooms. The Dialock system is secure, convenient and practical at minimum cost and can be installed by using the Basic system or the Online version. The Online version is considered for larger projects with the ability to shutdown the access in case of emergency. BT's Chinese deal prompts security concerns Despite security concerns, UK telecom giant BT is going ahead with their proposed deal with the Chinese telecom firm ZTE, BT officials have announced. According to BT, they are entering into the deal with ZTE in order to develop new mobile, wireless and fixed-line services. "We've been very impressed with the knowledge and sophistication of ZTE's team and, by combining our complementary strengths and expertise on a range of research projects, we expect this partnership to be very fruitful for both ourselves and our respective customers," says Clive Selley, BT Innovate chief. Master Lock Launches Facebook Game to 'Unlock a Cure' for Breast Cancer With more than 141 million casual gamers on Facebook, Master Lock is tapping into the power of the popular social network to challenge consumers to game for the greater good. Master Lock is launching a free game on www.Facebook.com that will generate donations for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) according to the level of fan participation. Master Lock will also challenge players to make a matching donation in the hopes of finding a cure and expanding the number of breast cancer survivors. In addition, the company is introducing new pink locking products to raise awareness for the cause and to help 'unlock a cure.'
"Breast cancer can and does strike anyone - young, old, male, female - and we are committed to playing our part in finding a cure," said Rebecca Smith, vice president After six years and numerous attempts by experts and hotel guests, Okato's Stony River Hotel, New Zealand, is giving the public a chance to crack its mystery safe - and throwing in a free meal to the successful safecracker. About 30 people have tried to open the floor safe, discovered in what's thought to be an old office during renovations to the hotel in 2005. In 2005 Wellington locksmith John Levestam used a computerised dialling system to try to crack the safe, which has a million potential combinations, but was unsuccessful.
