Regional apprentice takes Aussie state award in a first for the girls Apprentice locksmith, Vanessa Miller, from Bathurst's RCG Locksmiths has just been awarded TAFE NSW's Apprentice of the Year in Locksmithing, outshining all of her fellow students. Full StoryA locksmith in the USA has been arrested on a charge of stealing $500.000 in antique currency after being hired to open a safe after the owner lost the key. Although the owner of the safe and the contents has since died, after the notes appeared at collector's auctions they were traced back to the locksmith who had put them up for sale. When police searched his house they found further antique notes hidden in various places. So, what would you have done in a similar situation? It's easy to be honest for a few pounds (or bucks) but when presented with a life-changing amount... The theft will certainly change that particular locksmith's life: they don't let you off with a wag of the finger over there. And don't pretty much seem to care if prisons are overcrowded either! Do the crime, do the time, as they say. Full Story |

Locksmiths' views needed on Draft Qualification Structure Working UK locksmiths have been invited to comment on the draft Qualification Structure for the sector that has been produced by Skills for Security, following the Advisory Working Group meeting on May 24. Ruth Oliver, Skills and Standards Manager at Skills for Security said: "This is the first stage in the development of a nationally-recognised Level 2 qualification and we welcome the views of locksmiths from all four nations of the UK." Genuine Lishi Tool Selector now available at the touch of a button Two years on since UAP Tradelocks signed a partnership agreement with Mr Li, founder of the Genuine Lishi brand, there continues to be a growing interest in the high quality range of tools at shows and exhibitions. The brand has gained a worldwide reputation for excellence due to the tools exceptional quality, and also the reassurance that they will not damage locks. Last week, we reported on UAP Tradelocks visit to the Just Cars Expo in Las Vegas where the Genuine Lishi brand was well received. American-born locksmith trapped in Russia for 77 years suddenly speaks English again after stroke An American man trapped in the Soviet Union 77 years ago - deep in Stalinist times - has suddenly reverted to speaking in his native English instead of the Russian he was forced to learn to survive his epic Communist ordeal. Kenneth Edwards, now 95, recently suffered a stroke which left him unable to communicate with his Russian family and children. 'I am having to learn Russian all over again,' he said in a halting American accent in Zlatoust, an industrial Ural Mountains outpost where he worked in a watch-making factory for 60 years, latterly as the locksmith to the head of his department. Full StoryMacintyre breaks cover to back smartwater Crime-busting investigative journalist, Donal Macintyre, is to front a series of TV adverts for SmartWater Technology Ltd, having witnessed firsthand the influence that SmartWater has on criminal behaviour. Macintyre has exposed criminal activity around the globe with his hard-hitting, undercover reporting, and has on many occasions put himself in harms way in the process. He became aware of SmartWater whilst working on his TV series Macintyre's Big Sting and was immediately fascinated with its ability to both detect and deter criminality. Company fined after security guard dies from carbon monoxide poisoning A London construction company and a security company manager have been fined after a security guard died from carbon monoxide poisoning while at work. The Heath and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted Precis Holdings Ltd and Mr Obioma Chukwudi for their parts in the incident. This is why you shouldn't steal copper cable! These are the horrendous injuries suffered by a man after he was hit by 22,000 volts while stealing copper cable from an electricity substation. On the same day that LASN broadcast last week's issue we saw this report. James Sorby, 22, was burnt so badly burned his daughter was unable to recognise him. He had been trying take cabling from an electricity sub-station in a disused Post Office sorting room in Leeds, West Yorks. But before he could even touch the cable a massive charge jumped a gap to his body and he suffered severe burns to his face and hands, a weakened heart, lost partial sight in his left eye and lost movement in one of his hands. Full StoryThief caught after stolen laptop keeps taking his picture Police in Oakland, California, USA, have arrested a suspected laptop thief whose slack-jawed face became an Internet sensation after software that the owner had installed kept taking photos of the suspect, which the victim posted on his blog. Muthanna Aldebashi of Alameda was arrested on suspicion of possessing stolen goods. The 27-year-old taxi driver is being held in Alameda County jail. A web campaign to catch the alleged thief was launched by laptop owner Joshua Kaufman, who filed a police report in late March stating that someone had broken into his North Oakland apartment and stolen his Apple MacBook computer. Kaufman said he had installed software called Hidden that followed the computer's movements through a tracking device, and took pictures of the suspect's face while the man used the laptop.
