Young inventor Kevin Scott has come up with a 'bendy bike' that literally wraps around a tree or lamp post and locks to itself, instead of using the usual bike locks. A traditional bike at each end, the centre is made of glass-filled nylon sections that snap back into a rigid frame and can be ridden as normal. Kevin was awarded second prize in the UK-wide New Designers 2010 competition. Meanwhile, locksmiths and bike shops can still expect to see sales of more traditional security solutions continue. You can register to take part in these via the website: (the-auto-convention) Master Locksmiths Association develops CPD programme The leading trade association for the locksmithing industry has reinforced its commitment to members as it launches a new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme. The Master Locksmith Association (MLA) CPD programme encourages members of the association to develop skills and broaden their knowledge on an ongoing basis. It is the first CPD programme to be developed by a locksmithing association. DefCon expert finds biometric locks to be too fallible Security maverick Marc Tobias has demonstrated at the annual DefCon gathering in Las Vegas just how simple it is to defeat some of the world's top high-tech locks. "These locks might be winning awards but they are forgetting the basics," Tobias said. "They might be clever, but they aren't secure." MPL locks in to Bradford City FC Bradford City FC have announced the latest addition to their boardroom. Graham Jones of MPL has joined the team of directors after stepping up from two years as an associate. Jones got involved with the club through joint-chairman Mark Lawn. The pair run MPL in Wakefield which oversees six locksmith companies. "I've always supported Bradford and when Mark got involved with the club, I wanted to as well," said Jones. On a practical front, that has meant offering his expertise around the stadium to facilities manager David Dowse. "Because our game is handles, locks and security, I can work closely with David," he said. "With my involvement we can cut costs on maintenance of the stadium. I don't take a penny out the club, I just want to help where I can." An increasingly frequent occurance it seems, police in the US have arrested two men on charges that they were performing locksmith services without a license, including one man who was the subject of a TV News hidden-camera investigation. The investigation prompted a flood of complaints to the state Attorney General's office. Genie Supports The Sick Children's Trust "TEAM GENIE", from Genie CCTV Ltd supported the work of The Sick Children's Trust by participating in the London to Cambridge bike ride on 25th July 2010. This important cause provides "home from home" accommodation for families whose children are receiving hospital treatment for serious illness, often many miles from home. The work of this charity was brought to the attention of Genie when one of their technical team members, Tekin Onbashi had to call on their help after his baby daughter who was born 5 weeks prematurely was rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties and had to be put on a ventilator. The Sick Children's Trust helped immensely by providing free of charge accommodation which allowed Tek and his wife Debbie to stay by Megan's bedside whilst she was seriously ill. Locksmith's helping hand for injured soldiers leads to award
'Rogue Trader' locksmith guilty of defrauding customers A locksmith once exposed on BBC TV's Rogue Traders has been convicted at the Old Bailey of ripping off customers across London. As reported in the London Evening Standard Mark Makowski overcharged by thousands of pounds after being called out to get people back into their homes. He has a long history of exploiting vulnerable and desperate householders and was convicted in 2003 after an investigation by Hertfordshire County Council. Makowski was trapped again in August 2008 after Westminster City Council Trading Standards carried out a sting using officers posing as members of the public. Full Story

A dirty protest pensioner remains defiant after tipping human excrement on the heads of a locksmith and bailiff. The unfortunate pair arrived at the home of Halifax resident John Skelton to evict him following non-payment of council tax. The old boy had been saving his own waste for a few days in anticipation of such a visit and opened a window when they knocked on the door. The unlucky locksmith looked up, took the mess full in the face and, not surprisingly, was promptly sick. Mr Skelton was arrested and charged with assault, but remains unapologetic for both the non-payment and the dirty protest, blaming the council's neglect for his late wife's early demise.
