What CCTV users need to know about GDPR According to the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) there are estimated to be up to 6 million CCTV surveillance cameras in the United Kingdom. Many businesses use CCTV systems for their security benefits, however the images of people captured is classified as personal data. Due to this, businesses must comply with the Data Protection Act, or from May 2018, the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). ICO to seek comment on draft DPIA guidance The GDPR will require controllers to undertake a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) when their processing is likely to result in a high risk to individuals. Our draft guidance (expected later this month) will give further detail on how to assess risk, and will also propose a list of processing operations where DPIAs will be mandatory. The guidance will also discuss in what circumstances controllers will have to consult the ICO prior to processing. We will be seeking comments before 13 April, please check our Guide to the GDPR for further details.
