Queensland security review to see locksmiths' fingerprints taken

Queensland, Australia, is demanding that all its locksmiths submit themselves for fingerprinting as part of a nationwide crackdown on the security industry.

The move, which will cost $100 an application, has raised eyebrows with locksmiths, who argue they have been caught in a net meant to apply to nightclub bouncers and doormen.

Is life in the Cloud inherently insecure?

It is fair to say that sharing resources from a vast, undifferentiated pool of servers and switches carries its own real risks; it is the path to the Cloud that businesses need to address first. Any Cloud, however secure, that relies on the public internet to connect it is exposing its data to unnecessary risk.

Street fingerprinting

Police are now armed with a device that can scan fingerprints so they can correctly identify suspects who lie about their details.

In what sounds like something out of George Orwell's dystopia 1984, suspects can now be finger printed in the street thanks to the new hand-held gadget.

The mobile identification service scans a print, then checks it by trawling through a national database for the details.

Locking wheelie bins to thwart scavengers

Los Angeles: officials are considering making trash containers with built-in locks available to more residents as a tool to thwart scavengers.

The Costa Mesa Sanitary District distributed the bins to residents earlier this month as part of a pilot program. Now, because of demand, the district's board of directors will weigh a request for $10,000 to supply residents with more of the scavenger-proof bins.

iPOLiS goes MOBILE with new iPhone and Android Apps

The free iPOLiS MOBILE app, which can be downloaded from iTunes and Android market, allows users to control the pan, tilt and zoom functions of the latest Samsung network cameras on their sites via an easy-to-use interface. Set-up can be completed in less than a minute after which users are able to view streamed video from their selected camera via a wireless or 3G network.
